Assuming this story is valid, it's more of the usual coarse sand in the gears of Sun's microelectronics mill. As Ashlee Vance so aptly puts it:

theregister.co.uk

...Sun has a horrible history when it comes to shipping SPARC products on time. In fact, the UltraSPARC V chip was so late that Sun killed the project altogether and decided to ship servers based on chips from partner Fujitsu.

So here goes yet another main chance for differentiation slipping down the rabbit hole. If Intel actually gets a low-power multi-core Itanic shipping before Sun's Rock, one can kiss Sun's ass goodbye.

It might make an interesting MBA case history some day...management has already turned over and over, so who's to blame when the same development blunders keep happening over and over even so?

Maybe a cat-herding "engineers manage themselves because they can do no wrong" cultural history. Not that it matters.
