Of course not, but the end goal of government spending should be to provide whatever services are needed by the constituents, not to "put money into the economy."

Way back when this conversation started, I never said that the "end goal" of government spending should be to "put money into the economy". I just said that is the net effect. And that that had an major influence on the recovery from the recession. It's especially true with deficit spending precisely because there is no "economic drag" from from taxes related to the spending.

I am adamently against deficit government spending to get us out of a mild recession. You are just delaying the pain, and making it incrementally worse with interest. <Now when you get to FDR and a crisis depression, that's another matter.>

Hence I wouldn't call that "putting money into the economy." It might benefit the local Alaska economy, but the overall effect on the federal economy is negative.

And often government spending is the ONLY way to get things done. So it makes the use of tax dollar much more efficient than private money. Putting in a sewer system is an example off the top of my head... if everybody put in their own sewage system it would obviously be more costly and less efficient.

And private funds are not always efficient even in their own element. The housing and Internet bubbles are recent examples.

It's not black/white government/bad private/good. Its what is the most pragmatic and efficient solution to an individual problem.
