"Does that mean you believe war is good for the country?"

Having a strong military is important. And sometimes the military should be used.

That doesn't really answer my question. Then again maybe a "good" or "bad" reply is not applicable.

I guess we really need a national debate on what exactly we all mean by a strong military and under what circumstances, do we go to war. I am no longer comfortable with leaving those questions for our leaders to decide. I also think we need to decide where we are at as a country.

For some time, I have wondered if there is enough 'glue' to hold us altogether. I thought about that again last nite after responding to one of Brumar's posts. Its amazing to me how differently we all view the world even as we all grew up in the same country. In some cases, the differences are so huge, I don't how they get bridged.

For me, a strong military means one that is roughly half the size of the current one. For me, the military should be used sparingly......primarily for the defense of the homeland; occasionally in a joint policing action with other nations. That peace time should really be a time when the country is at peace and not where there is peace in the homeland but the military is fighting in some distant war.

If I am lucky, maybe half the people on this thread would agree to such an approach with the other half adamantly opposed to it. This is just one of several fundamental issues on which we have very little agreement in this country. What 'glue' can hold a nation together when the disagreements are so basic and run so deep?
