Remember reading a study some years ago - several groups of lab mice were able to obtain various drugs by pressing a lever. With most drugs - incl. opioids - they continued using them until they became weak, sick - and then, they sort of... quit. There were only 2 substances which the animals kept taking until the moment they collapsed and died - those were cocaine and nicotine. The conclusion was that - at least, for mice - those were the most addictive among all the drugs tested.

Ironically, many years ago the common belief was that those two substances were not addictive at all, just "habit forming". I did not believe it even back then, since I struggled plenty trying to quit smoking. Gave up the darn cigarettes 25 years ago, and still miss them.
