More bidders for SEZ possible -COO in paper

Tue Dec 18, 2007

ZURICH, Dec 18 (Reuters) - A range of rival candidates could bid for SEZ after Lam Research Corp offered $568 million for the Swiss maker of semiconductor equipment, a senior executive at SEZ was quoted as saying.

"It is possible that semiconductor company Applied Materials will knock on our door, as they have known our business for a very long time," Chief Operating Officer Kurt Lackenbucher told Switzerland's Handelszeitung.

Lam said on Dec. 10 that it had agreed to buy SEZ, bidding 38 Swiss francs ($33.01) per share and that it expected the deal to close in March 2008. The shares were down 0.9 percent to 38.35 francs on Tuesday.

Handelszeitung published an abstract of its interview with Lackenbucher a day before publication in full on Wednesday.

Lackenbucher also cited Tokyo Electron and Dainippon Screen as possible rivals to Lam's bid, according to the newspaper, though the latter was an unlikely candidate because of large overlaps.
