Washington didn't say that. You're quoting a letter written by a later President to one of the Barbary states, when we were paying tribute to them. Most of them sound a lot like they were agnostic or athiests. None of the FF's were agnostics or atheists or sounded like it. (I am excluding Thomas Paine as he had nothing to do with our founding documents.) Even the most religiously liberal among the FF's made statements that would get them branded part of the religious right today. Liberals lie about this a lot.
