David,
The BigFoot does have it's form factor as a decision maker/breaker. It could never fit into a notebook/laptop designers plans. My tower had the room.
What JTS needs, or perhaps doesn't need, is to get into one of those PCWeek or Computer Shopper product comparisons where the editors profile and compare the spectrum of offerings from the various vendors and issue a report on the best-of-breed, pick-of-the-litter, best-bang-for-the-buck, etc. This publicity, if they win, would go a long way toward getting name recognition and 'directed' purchases (the kind where the buyer comes in and asks for the product by name). Currently they are in the mail order catalogs (Global, Tiger, PC Connection, etc) but they are, as you said, lumped in with the rest of the 'big guns'.
But this just addresses the 'consumer' or 'geek' market. the real sales, where volume is obtained and lower margins may be accepted, comes from mass selling to OEMs for inclusion into systems. I think they are working on that, but they must get their financial act together to enable themaselves the luxury of keeping the production line running 24 hours a day and having the output 'booked'.
Have a good weekend.
Ben A.
PS I used to do the system price/performance analysis for the DASD subsystems for one IBM product line back in the 70's. Check my SI profile. |
