The word "communist" got a terrible rap in the 50's and afterward. Back in the New Deal era before the Soviet Union all "communist" meant was that people get together and share the burden and help one another, with help from the government. Even Steven, share and share alike, equal rights, 20 acres and a mule, etc. Very fair, just, Christian and pro-American thing.

When the Soviets turned into a military police state it gave big business interests on the rightwing ammunition to brand "communism" as evil. So we all grew up thinking all communism is evil and un-American. But there is such a thing as good communism, especially during a Great Depression which was caused by greedy big business and Wall Street tycoons who got too greedy.

It's ironic really since the American middleclass which Bushies are trying to get rid of was founded by a form of "communism". FDR was a "communist" in a good way. Johnny Cash liked to call it "communalism" but it's the same thing. It simply means sharing.
