there is a well known book published a year or so ago which showed that conservatives, and especially religious conservatives, are much more generous in their charitable giving.

Yup, conservatives are great about throwing a few pennies at inefficient private charities that accomplish little. Perhaps it is because they know they accomplish little or perhaps it is out of stinginess. However, conservatives' political lobbying efforts are the sole reason our efficient government charities are severely underfunded.

A good example of this is Katrina, where Bush pulled back the gov't help to let the private sector take over. The result? The private sector failed miserably. Or perhaps the miserable state of New Orleans was the goal, in which case this was a smashing success.
