You are talking about the 1940's when the Kennedys were very young and McCarthy had not yet turned into a far rightwing tyrant. McCarthy being Irish Catholic was a family friend of Joe. But once he went over to the Dark Side the Kennedy sons were very much against him.

However, this doesn't stop today's rightwing from misrepresenting the entire piece of history, as usual. People like Hannity are always trying to re-invent history, you notice, like claiming that Reagan ended the Soviet Union by building up the US nuclear arsenal. While that may have had an effect it was definitely not the key reason the Soviet Union fell. And when Reagan went to Berlin and said "bring down this wall" the Soviet Union had already collapsed.
