Yes, The New Deal was "good communism" when it was badly needed during the Great Depression. Soviets invented "bad communism" later which they turned into a fascist style military-police state where no one had any rights. That of course is the opposite of liberalism where everyone has full and equal rights.

See the difference? Communism was originally just a benign populist, Christian ideal that we need to share the wealth and help each other through rough times. Nothing wrong with it at all, and it didn't eliminate capitalism either. Both could work well together. It was only the Soviet types who later turned it into something wrong and ugly.

So what McCarthy did was take all those people who supported the "good communism" back during the Depression and unfairly branded them all as Soviet supporters and traitors. It was a hugely dishonest crime against millions of our people, almost all of them totally innocent. It was indeed a fascist attempt at a coup d'etat and could have very well ended up with gulags full of liberals if he had succeeded, but everyone got wise to McCarthy and stopped him. He died in disgrace and will go down in history as perhaps the worst traitor this country has ever seen.
