ESI Announces $1.4 Million Order for Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor Production Systems to Siemens Matsushita

PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq:ESIO) announced the first phase of a multi-million dollar order for its Palomar MLCC production testing systems and its Chip Star termination equipment to Siemens Matsushita's MLCC manufacturing facility in Austria. This first phase is part of a major expansion in MLCC production for Siemens with the second phase planned for 1998.

The multi-unit order consists of ESI's Palomar 3300 multi-function testers as well as Chip Star CS-325 termination systems and is scheduled to ship in the current quarter. Chip Star Inc., a subsidiary acquired by ESI in June, produces a fully automated product line for termination of MLCCs and capacitor arrays. The combination will provide Siemens with the most flexibility and highest performance of any MLCC testers and termination systems commercially available.

Dr. Roland Rathner, Director of Procurement for Siemens Matsushita Components facility in Deutschlandsberg, said, ''The combination of MLCC production equipment purchased from ESI will enable us to meet upcoming production demands of this planned expansion. ESI's reputation in the MLCC production industry is unmatched. We look forward to the addition of this equipment to increase our efficiency, adding value to our process.''

Elwood,

I agree that Global Warming is a serious danger, but at this point I'm not sure it's a good investment. As you say, if you look at the long range impact, all our worldly worries today won't mean a hill of beans. In fact, investing in a hill of beans could be the go. Or a few very good guns if you're that type.

Well, anyway I have a hard enough time dealing with todays worldly problems and some of that involves stopping global warming, but I must stay focused and loking for investments in totally new areas takes too much of my energy.

Thanks for the tip and concern. More people should be worried. I'm currently in Australia and it's a big issue here. Unfortunately, the government is totally stupid and usually corupt. Their recent meeting with the South Pacific nations in the Cook Islands was a total disaster.

Regards,

Mark
