I like your approach. Here's the gist of my thinking.

I was incredibly overweight in SONS with most of my buys in the 3s and 4s. As I firmly believe that global macroeconomic difficulties are potentially severe, the attendant negative implications for telecom capex are obvious. If correct, the SONS share price might get hit in the next year to 18 months. I therefore decided to take profits and re-invest at reduced levels if/when the share price got lower, as it has today.

Since I think SONS is worth 6.5 - 7, I have no problem buying a few shares. Might buy more, but I'm cautious, very cautious. I certainly do not intend to expose myself to the extent I had been exposed previously. Should have sold at 7-8.5 but who's perfect?
