The list revealed a handful of anticipated players, ranging from the giant--AT&T, Cox Communications, Google and Verizon Wireless--to the not-so-giant: regional carriers Leap Wireless and MetroPCS and startup Frontier Wireless. It also included surprise bidders that hadn't publicized their plans, such as fifth-ranked carrier Alltel, telecom R&D firm Qualcomm, Chevron and an Advance/Newhouse partnership perhaps related to Conde Nast.
