When? Maybe I was packing what you were picking.
'67-'71.
Took the stuff you picked, bleached in a sulfur brine so they were pale yellow, and turned them into fruit cocktail cherries, maraschinos, glazed, burgundy cherries, stemmed cocktail cherries,,, with the proper application of dyes and preservatives and heat. Every fruit cocktail cherry took 4 hours...yellow -> pink; they all had to look the same, cuz 'Murica expected perfection :>). They tried making FC cherries out of grapes, but it didn't work.
Spent one summer grading cherries. One day, had a process I had to time. No watch, of course. So the supe gave me his. Gold plated. Hands all corroded from all the sulfur in the air. Wonder what it was doing to his lungs. |
