It's not often that the 'government approach' is taken when it's not the best solution.

Its very often that a government approach is taken when it isn't the best solution.

It can also increase freedom. If not for public schools, an awful lot of folks couldn't afford to educate their kids.

That would be a benefit that might justify the decrease in freedom, but it doesn't amount to an increase in freedom.

Also there is no need to have public schools in order to have public financing of education (at least for those who can't afford it, but even public financing for everyone who wants it). We give people food stamps, rather than run government food distribution centers.
