The Kyoto protocol is very bad for big business, petroleum in particular but its a concerted global effort to reduce emissions (of which we're now the only holdout). Are you more in favour of permitting further pollution for corporate gain or improving my atmosphere?

The US Dept of Energy has published a list of carbon emissions due to fossil fuel consumption, year by year and country by country:

census.gov

If you compare at the numbers for 1997 and 2004, and compare the signers of Kyoto with the non-signers, you notice:

Emissions worldwide increased 18.0%.
Emissions from countries that signed the treaty increased 21.1%.
Emissions from non-signers increased 10.0%.
Emissions from the U.S. increased 6.6%.

I submit you are confusing political posturing with action. Kyoto has always been used for political cover by most of its signers. Look, we're virtuous! We signed! Now leave us the f--- alone! Go yell at the big bad US!
