other side of a transaction apparently stops looking after its self-interest.

So tempting but fraught with delusion and pretense to knowledge. "I will do good to the world". You see, I know so much. Who is "I"?

Cliches like "too good to be true" pop into my mind.

Born of distrust.

We can't know with certainty what the other thinks so the only sensible stance to take is that it acts in its self-interest.

Fair assumption. Whenever I start thinking in that game theory way about how some one else ought to act, I have to stop myself.
