I have watched great excitement on SI and elsewhere over the Y2K thing and then the bird flu thing (more likely), but here we have the prospect of serious starvation in many countries, especially Africa, and very little interest in it. Maybe this is because back in the 1960s there were people predicting world famine and then the "green revolution" (greatly improved seeds and more fertilizer) made that a figment.

But just as "peak oil" took so long to make itself truly evident (and some people still don't buy the idea), so peak food is nearly here, and people treat it like something Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen Spielberg might have thought up-- rather than a reality.
