The ammo is for when the canned food runs out at the local WalMart after American society totally breaks down. Most of us live in cities, and we don't have potatoes growing in the garden.

When the trucks stop delivering the food because there isn't any diesel, the folks will strip the WalMarts. Once that is eaten, they'll start raiding houses. After that, what's left but pets and cannibalism?

Rent and watch "Quest for Fire". I learned from that movie that by eating a person a limb at a time and cauterizing the wounds and keeping the meat alive it will stay fresh without refrigeration.

Now, I'm thinking way ahead. But, fortune favors the prepared. Guns and ammo are decent investments at any time, but will be completely indispensable in a new dark age.
