Air France-KLM Announces Acquisition of Regional Carrier VLM Airlines

PARIS (AP) -- Air France-KLM said Monday it agreed to acquire European regional carrier VLM Airlines for an undisclosed sum.

In a statement, Air France-KLM said the Belgium-based carrier, which operates largely out of London City Airport, would "actively cooperate" with CityJet, an Air France-KLM-owned regional carrier that also operates out of London City.

CityJet Chief Executive Geoffrey O'Brian-White said in a statement that the airline networks "are highly complementary and the new combined network will link London City with major European business and financial centers."

VLM Airlines, which operates a fleet of 18 Fokker 50 and one BAE 146 caters mainly to business travelers, and is owned by Holland's Panta Holdings B.V.

The deal follows recent Air France-KLM offer for Italy's ailing state-controlled carrier Alitalia. Last week, Alitalia's board unanimously named the airline as its preferred bidder. The Italian government is studying the proposal.
