Yes, technology overhauls take a long time as the old fades away and the new takes over. I was thinking about it and let's just take one example. People like to record movies for playback. We used to do that with VCRs. Then we started doing that with DVDs. Then even more recently, we don't even bother with the removable medium; instead we record it on a digital hard drive on DVRs. I have all three of those in my home and we still use all 3. You would have thought that VHS tapes and VCR would have disappeared, but they haven't. Same thing with ICE propulsion for cars and trucks. We'll still have them around 30-40 years from now, but I'm hoping it will be used similarly to my VCR now...rarely and only because we still have some nostalgia. :)

BTW, companies like Tesla and Altair have already solved the large format Lithium battery problem for cars. GM and Toyota are playing catch-up in the battery tech department, but they will get there. All the major car companies will have EV offerings by 2010-2012. The only thing that could stop that train is oil prices coming down to $30-40 by 2010...which I seriously doubt will happen.

OPEC has really screwed themselves over long term this time around. They don't see it coming, but this really may be the last hurrah for them. So I hope they save some of this oil bubble money. They will need it.
