"It has always been rare to win the popular vote but lose the election. The simplest cure is proportional representation of the electoral college vote but the states don't want to do it. Individual state importance to the vote would drop off greatly." Since our Founding Fathers envisioned a weak federal government and stronger states doing anything to further weaken the states vis-a-vie the federal government would undermine the design.
