Is it possible that the problem was grass roots objection to both increased taxes and decreased access to quality medical care?

"In each state, the initiatives confronted entrenched opposition from insurance and other business lobbies that made it far more difficult to build a consensus for change than in the smaller New England states that acted in recent years."

"state officials are struggling to prevent double-digit premium increases next year."

Proponents of Socialized Medicine keep claiming that bloated bureaucracy will have lower costs than a network of competing businesses.

"That is not to say support for their plan is universal; it won not a single Republican vote in the Assembly. Some unions oppose it because they fear that mandatory insurance policies would not be affordable, even with government subsidies."

If Republican voters supported Socialized Medicine noe of these lawmakers could be reelected. It is an indicator of public objection. Even unions fear it.

"Four states effectively guaranteed that all children could be insured through expanded eligibility for Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, known as S-chip."

They plan to displace private insurance for middle class Americans. Why? Maybe because they are healthier and will hold down cost increases? Maybe so they can get the magic 51% addicted to government subsidies? Anyone who cares about the children would be much more interested in covering poor children before adding coverage for the middle class.
