Is the price tag of that really as small as $420 billion, or 50 cents per square foot? No way.

Maybe the study is talking about how much government subsidies are needed to help private equity finance such a huge undertaking. Or maybe the $420 billion will go into research that will improve the cost and efficiency of solar cells. The article doesn't say.


Yes they are talking about the subsidies required. Selling electricity will still produce a profit, regardless if it's solar or coal generated. You've got to understand that solar is quickly approaching "grid parity"... could be 2-5 years at the current rate of change.

Nobody is talking about the government picking up the tab for building the solar plants. Just subsidies to level the playing field until it levels itself.
