Thermodynamics is the study of all heat processes, with if anything, a bent towards using statistics as the underlying math. If anything Heat Transfer is the old term for studying heat processes, with a more classical set of equations, but is also often considered to be limited to heat flow from hot to cold bodies. The classes I took were in fact called Statistical Thermodynamics and were based on surprise, statistics, and the Calculs of Variation. Engineering Thermodynamics tends to avoid the degree of math, and instead take a bit more "classical" approach.

What? Classical thermodynamics is very heavy in math especially calculus and not one bit of heat transfer. It's all about conversion of energy, especially heat, into work, not heat transfer. Heat transfer is simple compared to thermodynamics. I have no idea what Statistical Thermodynamics is, but it sounds like a good cover for the many brain washing courses in liberal arts schools.
