i also expect wal mart becomes a training ground for level entry low paying jobs. in your post you sighted loading docks,, ie driving fork lift trucks.would be a good example.
another can be stocking shelves... yes, just stocking shelves..can give them experience to go to a union grocery store with higher pay scale and benefits. I knew a few guys who made a decent living years ago stocking shelves for the first national stores.. now a&p. i think. later worked himself up to shift supervisor. i would expect if some of these people are take charge , willing to learn , can advance. the opportunities are out there. Even working for small snack stores.. they can move up with experience to assistant manager and be paid a decent salary.. they put in long hours but most pull in around $50,000. . if they get their own store salaries go to $70,000 or higher. i knew a young lady who was pulling in $150,000 a year as manager at "in and out" in l. a. area. i am not talking college grads or even some college rather h.s. or equivalent. we pooh pooh too much.

Wal mart does improve the standard of living for the community. on average i believe the numbers are like savings of close to $2000 a year if they shop groceries in addition to dry goods at wal mart. that is quite a bit of spendable income in savings.

I also expect the assessments for real estate tax base is much higher than several local stores who may have the tax assessor in their back pocket or pleading for abatements. I highly doubt these stores pay much more if they do to the clerks who work in these stores. more likely the franchise owner or private owner is sucking out as much income he can to bring back to his family.
