Bob,

Joe when you talk 386 code your short sightedness is showing

Vast majority of PC software is 386 code. The rest is 8086 code. There are no new instructions in 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II or everything that will come between now and Merced.

There are some new bells and whistles in the follow up processors, for example 486 added L1 cache, added internal FPU unit, Pentium increased data bus to 64 bits and all psot 386 processors are able to execute instructions in fewer clock cycles, and in some cases can execute more than 1 instruction in 1 clock cycle.

But it's pretty much all 386 code. Btw, it about 8 years after 386 became available for mainstream software (Win 95) to catch up and take full advantage of 386 architecture and instruction set.
