Garmin GPS Helps Drive Amazon.com's Record-Setting Sales Dec 27, 2007 GPS World This holiday buying season may have proved lackluster for brick-and-mortar retailers, and many online retailers are reporting slowed year-over-year sales growth, but online retail giant Amazon.com reported its best season ever—thanks in no small part to GPS electronics. Amazon said Wednesday that its peak day this holiday season was Monday, December 10, when its customers ordered more than 5.4 million items—62.5 items per second. As for GPS unit sales, the company didn't put a number on the units sold, but suggested that if they were lined up together, they would stretch from New York to Philadelphia—81 miles as the crow flies. Assuming an average width of 3.5 to 4 inches, that's between 1.28 million and 1.47 million units. Amazon did say that Garmin GPS devices were among the top sellers in consumer electronics, along with Canon PowerShot digital Elph cameras and Samsung LCD high-definition televisions.
