When I fly over LA, Phoenix, etc, I see mostly roofs, not trees. You can leave the trees there are. Nanosolar is already claiming to have panels at $0.99/peak watt (although production is sold out for a year or more).

Nothing is going to compete with the notion that (for some geographic locations anyway) you can flip the finger at the Utilities for most of your needs, or even stiff them for money if you feed power back to the grid, but still use them when the sun don't shine, for not much $/month. After awhile, the Utility will be as screwed by the economics of that nonsense as they were by Enron, but since it is lots of J6Ps screwing them and not some oil company CEO, the pols will tolerate it and even celebrate it. The Utility will of course be in no position to fund coal plants at that stage.
