People are working on short term storage (days or a couple of days for a single house need) That problem is going to go away shortly as well.

What you must keep in mind is that the utility invests in new plants with a longish payback period. So far, there have not been technological dislocations to clobber that assumption. There are now such looming. It is going to be a bit of an ouch for some multi-billion $ projects. And it is going to shut down ones further out.

I know that you like to bash AGW, but the planets are kind of lining up rather nicely for solar. 1) The technical problems are being solved, 2) The economics is finally competitive, 3) The cool factor is good, 4) if AGW keeps advancing (I'm sure it will, but you can discount this one if you like) then it greatly boosts solar, while killing coal and 5) solar will be largely a distributed, populist energy source, on individuals homes, not large utility sites (those these get the current buzz, I think they are largely toast in the end) This latter effect is very "American" and will have great appeal.

It is going to be very interesting to watch, and I intend to make some coin off it as well.
