Yes, it can happen. When I was twenty three, four and a half months after a serious auto accident I had plastic surgery on my face and opened my eyes when the surgeon made the first cut on my forehead. He looked down into my eyes and said, "What are you doing awake?" I promptly said, "You tell me" and I looked over at the surgical nurse using the suctioning tube and also saw a tray of surgical tools, whereupon he looked at the anesthetist and spewed a curse word and told him to increase the flow of my anesthetic. Before that I heard their conversations of gossip and jokes going around the hospital and laughter and that prompted me to open my eyes as I knew where I was. With the increase, I went out. I felt no pain, but the sound of the knife cutting my skin was like a crackling noise to me. The surgery was a complete success, but remains in my memory of odd things happening under anesthesia. I remember thinking they were having a great time at my expense...but thankful they knew what they were doing.

Before the surgery I thought I would never look the same again, but healed quickly and the surgery scars have faded over the years where they are not noticed by any one. Now, I wear them well with makeup.
