Was FDR successful in getting the nation out of the worst depression in its history, or was he not?

He (and Hoover before him) where successful at making it one of the worst, perhaps the worst, economic downturns in US history.

The worst two years of the depression where unemployment was the highest were 1932 and 1933. FDR didn't take office until 1933. I think the major blame is on Hoover. It was FDR that slowly pulled the country out of depression.
