When you are 18, you have very little of a world view and its very hard to know what's the best approach to take with your education to optimize your job potential. That's where I believe the American educational system falls most short.

I've often thought people should be required to work for two years before entering collage. First, especially with todays' sheltered kids, it would give them a feel for what they are studying for... that their jobs will be better and better paying if they apply themselves. Second 'real world' learning is much more effective than academic learning because there are actual results from decisions and actions. So the kids would be better prepared for academic learning... and understanding consequences.
