This isn't really true. Most "scientific" individuals of the time (and since the Greeks) knew the truth. Look what happened to Galileo! His fellow scientists, while knowing the truth, had the good sense to keep their counsel among themselves to avoid persecution from the Fundamentalist Republican types in power at the time. Then, as now, the power structure was EASILY able to find for sale "scientists" to deny heliocentricism. Just as now they find those to deny climate change, evolution, say the Earth is 6000 years old, etc.
