"I like things to be clean and prefer things like windmills to burning coal."

There must be some limit to solar and wind beyond which reliability becomes an issue. On the Hawaiian Big Island the wind really blows during the day and they are building wind farms. I assume at night the wind drops off so wind power would disappear. At that point a fuel generated source of power would be necessary. What happens is you would have to spend the money for a dual capacity. Boy - that would get expensive.

As for coal - if it is first gasified and then burnt it would be extremely clean.
