We become that which we seek and for which we sacrifice

I like your whole post, gem, and especially this part I highlighted.

I live off my investments and I choose them regardless of any moral implication, so I guess that makes me less principled than many. However, I do despair at times over the attitudes that seem to be prevailing in society.

It makes me sad that we, as a nation, aren't even united in having universal health care be a GOAL much less having unanimity with regards to how it would be paid for. Likewise for raising wages for the working poor.

The idealogy of the 60s is truly dead and gone. The electorate has been brainwashed into focusing on the pittances that are lost to welfare cheats and have become oblivious to the significant amounts of tax dollars that are lost to corporate fraud and/or doctors and hospitals that cheat Medicare, for ex.

And why do we keep voting in people who have a vested interest in seeing government do poorly? How many ways have we heard Republicans claim that 'govt. is the problem, not the solution', govt. is 'too big' or 'wasteful' or 'inefficient' or some other variation of these sentiments?

We elect people who believe this, who campaign on it, and then once elected, set about to prove themselves right!!! Under their administrations, we do indeed end up with a disfunctional government.....a govt. that can't even execute a war strategy.....something that should be their balliwick...lol!!!

The electorate is scared to death of democrats when this is the party that believes in govt. and has a vested interest in making goverment work. It's too bizarre for me, and I don't know how we, as a country came to this.

But again, thanks for your lovely post and may 2008 be a good one for all of us..:<)
