The current Iowa polls for the Democratic nomination proves that there is no such thing as "the inevitable candidate".

Additionally, it proves that a candidate campaigning for the past 6 years in Iowa, a candidate with the a name recognition and a candidate from nowhere gets equal attention and support from Iowa voters.

Furthermore the Generation X voter in Iowa is away at home with family and hence not part of the poll conducted over the past 7 to 10 days. That should explain Obama's slip.
