Running shorts have also increased in length over the years. The type that Lance Armstrong was wearing in the NYC Marathon is much more the norm for the general public than track racing shorts. I'll occasionally run into a pair from the late 70's-early 80's and have no idea how I ever went out in public with them, especially shirtless in the summer. They do still sell a modified version "race day shorts" with four inch inseams. I don't have the nerve to wear them often, but feel much younger and less stodgy when I do... at least for a few minutes.
