Berlin: Symphony of a Great City

Playback everything, forever backwards and forwards...
JJ, does the following sound familiar to you? [...]

Since we last talked about it here I came across a movie of 1927 with the above title. It showed a day in the life of the city Berlin. The director Walter Ruttmann and his team were busy for one year to collect all the scenes assembled in the film. During World War II the original score of the accompanying orchestra music was lost, only a piano transcription survived. For the 80th anniversary a composer was asked to create a new orchestral score. The premiere of the new score with live music and the projected movie was on September 24, 2007 in Friedrichstadtpalast, Berlin.

An earlier version is available in full length at Google Video:

Observations and recordings which seemed to be trivial in 1927 are fascinating today.

In my quest to pursue "life recording experiments" I recently produced a full hour of a trip with the Berlin circle line.

Encoding a HDV recording to an Adobe Flash Video (resolution 640x360) with the On2 VP6 codec en.wikipedia.org of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 required 25 CPU hours. The output file has a size of 1.5 GB. As I have selected a bitrate of 1 Mbps it streams well. I have stored the file on a host which offers 150 GB storage for $8/month. It enables me to go beyond the 10 min time limit of YouTube and most other video sharing services (and also the tiny 320x240 resolution). I would like to explore more Flash options in future and embed links so that a viewer can stop the video and access background information on special landmarks or buildings currently visible in the scene.

The clip has still too many imperfections for making it publicly available but if anybody is interested in my sketch the link and password are available by PM.
