My Blackberry is a modem on my laptop.

That's my point. Virtually all phones (except iPhone) can be a modem for a laptop or a car, and most cars already have a bluetooth option which could, in theory, be used with the dial-up networking profile. The presence of an iPhone dock connector does not offer a material benefit in my mind for enabling a data pipe.

I agree with your vision of the various benefits of in-car internet connectivity, but I don't think you need an iPhone to get there.
