Do any of you remember the Airline class action antitrust lawsuit of about six years ago ? This is the same thing. A class action lawsuit is settled by giving a meaningless rebate, the only ones who win are the plantiffs attorneys. The rebate is meaningless because:

1. Probably 80% of them will never even be used
2. It's a relatively small rebate (less than 20% of the product's selling price).
3. The product is outrageously priced to begin with: for the price of an "overdrive" chip to put MMX and higher speed into an older non-MMX low-speed motherboard, you could buy a standard higher-speed MMX processor AND a new motherboard.
4. Because of 3, the volume is low to begin with; even if all of the coupons were redeemed, there would probably be no material impact.

For the most part, "Overdrive" chips are offered as an accomodation, and for psychological reasons. They hardly ever make economic sense, most buyers realize this, the number actually sold is relatively small.

Both the suit and its settlement are immaterial (literally).
