The GOP wants to run against Obama or Hillary. They believe that Romney can defeat them both or at least make it very close. Don't underestimate them. Maybe they can.

Edwards is obviously the hardest to attack. The fact that he's successful is irrelevant. He is self-made. His family were lower middleclass working folks. And he made good. High school quarterback, hometown hero, lost his son, wife has cancer but is a trooper, family man, good Christian but not a square, etc. The heartland will lap it up.

And just watch the GOP try to defend against his anti-corruption message. They are SO guilty and they know it.
