Lane3, The cases to which I refer predate the jogging fad by about a decade. One of the cases which stands out in my mind was that of a quite young woman who had a critical cardiac emergency and who was turned away by other hospitals before arriving at ours--many freeway miles from the declining hospitals and from her home. In our emergency room, we inserted a pacemaker. Sadly, it came too late for her; she died. I cannot comment on the other case without breaching medical confidentiality.

It is bad law because there are now urgent-care centers to handle these minor medical conditions. Those did not exist in bygone times. Unlike emergency rooms, the law excusing the ailing from paying for their health care in emergency rooms does not apply to treatment at the urgent-care centers. Still, there are clinics and government assistance for those who truly cannot afford needed medical care. Were I to tell you what is available to those sufficiently savvy to make such connection to government assistance, you would probably fall off your chair. <g>

My opinion--and one which I apply to myself--runny noses and skinned knees and other such medical mundanities are best treated with tincture of time and rarely require a visit to a health care professional. - Holly

<edit> The aforementioned case also predated 911, paramedic ambulances, hospital radio base stations, and trauma centers.
