Seriously, on the Dem side, I can see a sort of analogy to what happened in 1968. Gene McCarthy and RFK garnered the passion, but the Party establishment backed Humphrey. This angered enough of the Dem roots to allow Nixon to win the general.

If the Clinton machine and the Dem insiders manage to steamroll Obama, that will leave the general election wide open for an electable (not Huckabee) GOP nominee to take the prize. The depth of loathing and animosity felt towards Hillary Clinton extends far beyond the GOP base.

Interesting times...
