Imperial or imperialistic sovereignty, domination, or control: “There is a growing sense that the course of empire is shifting toward the . . . Asians” (James Traub). Oh, ok. You want to call the 50 states and our Trust Territories an "empire." I won't quibble with you about that. However, it isn't an "empire" in the traditional sense of the word, but I'll let you have a pass on it. <G> I thought you were using the term in a more colloquial sense, such as India was a part of the British Empire. Since you are referring to the US proper, it fits the definition.
