Which we certainly are. If not us, then there ARE NO 'empires' in the world anymore. The word would have no realistic expression in our modern world.

PS. I pose a question for you --- if a country conquers and ABSORBS the conquered lands into it's own national construct... (as, say, the Romans did... or the Chinese did... or the Russian Czars did... or the Egyptians or the Huns or the Ottomans or the Americans did...) then, does *that* count under your definition for 'empire', Jim... or not?
