Looking at McCain in a general election, I am doubtful how he would do with independents unless he is running against Hillary. Otherwise, McCain's stance on Iraq and his kissing up to Bush this election season rubbed a lot of us the wrong way, even though he was well liked by independents when he was tripping up Bush on various issues.

Compared to Obama, McCain wouldn't have much traction to advocate change in Washington after his lengthy tenure and lining up behind Bush in some respects.

Hillary could certainly lose an election. Not sure if McCain could win one on his own, a doubt I don't share about Obama. If Obama gives a closing statement like last night's speech, at the final October debate, the independents will be all over him. I don't see what McCain has that competes. JMHO.
