Your point of the atmospheric layering is well taken. I was just commenting that even if the upper atmosphere were closer to the surface temp, you still don't have much escaping, especially of the heavier molecules. Hydrogen and Helium are more mobile so they don't last so long, and Helium is not be replaced in the atmosphere much AFAIK.
