To play devil's advocate, why bother with public education at all? It simply pushes the educational horizon further out, thus harshing everyone's mellow. My great-grandfather didn't make it past third grade and yet he earned a very good living. Does everyone really need to add, or read and write? We've got computers that can do all that now. Just say no to literacy! Vastly over-rated.
